The Platform by Zirngibl The Platform by Zirngibl

This is a really personal piece to me, almost to the point of being fine art. On the outside, it's a kind of "virtual artificial life ecosystem" (VALE) which forms a kind of emergent intelligence. It's an interface of sorts, a kind of visual programming. I will explain how it works more in the future! (Since this one started out as a style test, conveying meaning was not the primary goal.)

The more personal side of this is that I see shapes like this in my mind's eye, constantly, in both 2D and 3D. I have synesthesia, so this is kind of a personal expression of what I see when thinking, although more elaborate. (I feel like I've wanted to get this image out for half my life!) The sci fi scenario is a re-skin of how I see my own mind.

Haha, good choice of words by saying it's a "condition" and not a "disorder" (more neutral, since it's not exactly "negative").  Apparently synesthesia is most common in mathematicians (Mandelbrot being a good example), although it's also more prominent in musicians.  Haven't seen much info about visual artists (surprisingly) but abstractionists like Wassily Kandinsky had it.

I do wonder though whether it hinders certain modes of thinking that are entirely in the abstract, by consuming mental bandwidth, though.  I also have really low memory capacity for my visualizations, it's kind of "in one eye and out the other" so to speak, so recording things as they actually happen is a challenge.  Some people have a photographic memory for their mind's eye visualizations which allow them to solve math problems through interacting shapes.  I think the best mine offers is a kind of intuition for abstract thinking, but I still need the aid of traditional methods to actually work out problems in detail.

But what fascinates me is the idea of a completely visual form of communication BETWEEN individuals, say, through augmented reality.  That's part of the science fiction project I'm working on.

Lol, I would've preferred to use the word gift.

And it's amazing to see however many variations of the condition there are and all the various benefits and detriments they poses. what I think would be amazing would be to have control over the exact nature of your condition. Like being able to change wich senses conect to wich and in what way by thought. I believe such a more evolved version of synesthesia (as well as its current versions in the short term) could be a key to helping our race gain a deeper understanding of the universe... and beyond.

Thanks!  I used to play WoW - played Vanilla, later dipped back to play Burning Crusade and Lich.  I like PVP and it would be fun to play again and explore the new content, but I've been too busy.  :-/  I looked it up and it looks fun to explore, I love when they get surreal there in their environments.

Thanks, I'd LOVE for this to be part of a video game, and I'm actually working on some pitch projects along those lines.  It means a lot to hear someone else think that.  Just need to raise some money - but so pumped about the future!  :D

I wouldn't say you need money, explicitly, just someone willing and able to execute it.
Well, good luck!

It's modeled/assembled in 3DS Max - the final scene had about 26 million polygons!  It's kinda hard to explain in detail because there were a lot of steps.  I've been experimenting with making animations, converting the frames to vectors, and then bringing those into 3D.  The idea of time as a third dimension fascinates me, and it's actually part of how my mind's eye sees shapes if that makes sense.  Like you have a sequence of changing shapes all stacked up.  Like the idea of a moon orbiting around a planet would look like a helix wrapping around a long bar in that kind of thinking.

Oh yeah, back to process... another thing I did was a bunch of render passes made of emittive materials, so they were totally flat.  I was then able to use those as masks to paint within or change the colors.  I also render a "zdepth map" to add atmosphere in 3D.  The initial render looked really ugly without the postprocessing, believe me!  (I should make a tutorial, sometime.)
